(July 12, 2024) It’s been said that there’s no place like home. For some, home may bring to mind childhood memories filled with fun and family. D.C.-based Soul and jazz singer Cecily explores this theme on her new single, “Come Home.”
In the song, Cecily reminisces about “baked apples in the morning,” playing “Nintendo in the attic,” and “dancing and singing to Jackson 5 tunes.” It sounds like she’s recalling these precious moments to the relative(s) she shared them with, as if to say, “Remember all the good times we had?”
“Come Home” is like having a photo album with some of Cecily’s favorite moments from childhood; but rather than just having us look at the pictures, she sings through the pages, so to speak, explaining each memory. The soothing sound and honest lyrics that Cecily is known for are on full display within this song, and you can hear why her voice has been compared to Amel Larrieux and Minnie Riperton.
“Come Home” will be included on Cecily’s new album, Awakening Pt. II (release date: July 26th); it is a follow-up to her 2019 critically acclaimed release, Awakening Pt. I. Awakening Pt. II is inspired by the best-selling book “All About Love” written by late author Gloria Watkins, who was better known by her pen name “bell hooks.” In speaking about the author’s influence on her new album, Cecily commented: “bell hooks said, ‘All awakening to love is spiritual awakening,’ and that’s how I felt when I wrote these songs and more broadly in my journey to awakening to love.’”
