SoulTrackers have been following guitarist Michael J. Calhoun for over four decades, through his time with Kinsman Dazz to The Dazz Band to his solo career and his more recent time making hits with BluDazz.
Now in 2023, Calhoun continues to deliver great R&B music via the current incarnation of the historic Kinsman Dazz Band, on a cut that addresses the difficulty of rising to new heights when surrounded by a challenging environment.
“Ghetto Preacher” has the feel of a classic 1970s song of social consciousness, with an urgent soundtrack that is quite timeless. It tells the tale of a man who was born and raised in the ghetto, and is asking the help of a local cleric to keep him moving in the right direction:
Ghetto Preacher, Teach me right from wrong
Ghetto Preacher, Help me stay strong
Eddie B. Sands’ gruff vocals are the perfect fit for the gritty song. And as with his other recent cuts, Calhoun brings along a group of talented musicians and a composition that should appeal to both classic soulheads and more contemporary R&B fans.
Kinsman Dazz Band has just released a powerful music video for the song, and it is our Video of the Month. Check it out below.
