(June 27, 2016) When it came to writing hits, there weren’t many better in the 50s and 60s than Bonny “Sir Mack” Rice. We’re sad to report that the Mississippi-born, Detroit transplant singer and songwriter has died at age 82. He is survived by his wife, Laura Rice, two sisters, his children and grandchildren.
If Rice had just wrote the legendary song “Respect Yourself,” he would have reserved his spot in music history. But he followed it with dozens of others such as “Cheaper to Keep Her,” Do the Funky Penguin,” and his signature Top 20 hit as a singer, “Mustang Sally” (later an even bigger hit for Wilson Pickett). Artists from The Staple Singers to Etta James to Eddie Floyd and even The Blues Brothers recorded Rice’s compositions over the years.
While best known as a songwriter, Rice also performed, first with the group the Five Scalders, then with the Falcons and later as a solo artist. He continued to record into his 70s, last issuing the funky blues album Get That Money in 2006.
For his many, many great compositions and his contribution to the development of R&B in the 1960s and beyond, Sir Mack will continue to be lauded for years to come. Rest in peace, Sir Mack.
