The combination of the legendary group The Spinners and songwriter/producer Thom Bell on Atlantic Records led to seven years of musical bliss from 1972-79, and a collection of hits that have defied the test of time. But the group’s recording success didn’t end when Bell walked away at the end of the decade.
Another phase of the storied group began when they teamed with dance music producer Michael Zager, resulting in top 5 hits “Working My Way Back To You/Forgive Me Girl,” and “Cupid/I’ve Loved You For A Long Time.” Those songs are the anchor of the upcoming collection on SoulMusic Records, celebrating the Spinners’ second phase on Atlantic Records, from 1979-1984, when they issued six albums working with the likes of Zager, James Mtume, Freddie Perren and Leon Sylvers, among others.
The included albums (in deluxe editions) are Dancin’ & Lovin, Love Trippin’, Labor of Love, Can’t Shake This Feelin’, Grand Slam, Cross Fire, and a bonus of the 1975 Spinners Live album.
The collection has been remastered by Roger Williams and includes a deluxe booklet with comprehensive, album-by-album notes by The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese drawing on exclusive quotes from John Edwards, the late Henry Fambrough, Michael Zager, and Tawatha Agee.
