When I first heard Prince BlkMagic Damons’ introduction for his debut Atmospheric Soul, stating there is something for everyone, I was brimming with anticipation for a urban music variety pack. With a galaxy of stars including Tower of Power’s former lead vocalist Lenny Williams, American Idol alumn LaToya London, neo-soul stylist Dwele and rapper E-40, Damons reeled in some impressive company to handle their business. However, reality set in as the listening experience during the first portion of Atmospheric Soul turned mostly into an old-school funk and hip-hop auto-tuned filled mess.
Thankfully about mid-way through, Dwele saves the day by throwing down some hardcore retro love (Stalkin’). Damons continues to redeem himself by pulling off a few more pleasing collaborations with his talented supporting cast. First, Williams kicks a brilliant vocal counterpoint to Damons’ soft spoken responses on the song "In Love." Then Damons reconstructs "Tighten Up," the 1968 soul disco smash hit from Archie Bell & The Drells, into a mildly entertaining workout while giving props from Michael Jackson to Soulja Boy Tell’em. Finally, Rosie Gaines joins London in a powerful soul/country flavored duet ("Best Friend").
Despite his claim on Atmospheric Soul that there is something for everyone, Damons caters primarily to a younger R&B audience while tossing in a pop tune here, a neo-soul tune there and some jazz-tinged funk ("U Can Make It"). Overall, Damons’ debut falls somewhat short of its opening claims, but, with the help of a strong supporting cast, ultimately redeems itself, keeping Atmospheric Soul from falling out of the stratosphere.
