Lost Gem: Roy Hargrove & Larry Willis Explore “Ethiopia”

There is something especially intense, warm and soulful about the sound of a flugelhorn. In the right hands, the instrument to my ear is unmatched as a vessel to convey emotional depth, sincerity and intimacy.

There may be no better proof of this hypothesis than our featured lost gem, “Ethiopia,” performed live in 1998 by the late Roy Hargrove and the song’s composer, Larry Willis. The stillness of Hargrove’s rich, dark tone here will travel straight to your soul.  That’s a promise.
