(May 21, 2016) Gregory Porter achieved his fame the old fashioned way: He created a quartet of highly albums that feature great musicianship, vivid and intelligent lyricism delivered by a singer with a sense of timing and history who brings honesty and soul to his vocal renderings.
His latest album, Take Me To The Alley, includes a bevy of First Listen candidates, and I struggled to choose one before deciding on the title track. There is a sermon and social commentary in this song’s lyrics that make “Take Me To The Alley” a tune that needs to be heard in the place and time where we as a society now find ourselves.
