Listening Room: An instant classic from two Southern Soul legends

otis-billy

Billy Price and Otis Clay: Two singers separated by a generation come together in a performance that moves the Southern soul tradition a little bit further up the road.

Pittsburgh rhythm and blues singer Billy Price and deep Southern soul/gospel icon Otis Clay, who passed away in January, worked with masterful guitarist/producer Duke Robillard to create their first full-album collaboration, This Time for Real. The album was awarded Soul Blues Album of the Year by the Blues Foundation at the annual Blues Music Awards held recently in Memphis, Tennessee.

Blues Hall of Fame member Otis Clay was one of the defining voices of Southern soul music. In the 1960s, Clay made his name with breakout soul hits, highlighted by the 1972 release of his “Trying To Live My Life Without You,” a Willie Mitchell production on the Memphis-based Hi label.

Billy Price built a strong reputation among music fans as vocalist with Washington, D.C.-area guitarist Roy Buchanan in the 1970s before recording and releasing 14 CDs and DVDs of his own over his long career. Clay and Price began collaborating and performing together in the early 1980s, culminating in This Time for Real, the final recording of Otis Clay’s distinguished career.

We’re extremely proud to present this important album as our newest SoulTracks Listening Room. Check out these two legendary artists together on an instant classic album.
