First Listen: Tristan and Heston remake a Keni Burke classic

(July 1, 2017) Keni Burke, as a member of the Five Stairsteps, The Invisible Man’s Band and as a solo artist, played a key role in creating memorable soul and funk hits. Two of those tunes – “Ooh Child” by the Five Stairsteps and The Invisible Man’s Band’s “All Night Thing” – ruled radio when they were released.

“Risin’ To the Top,” a cut on Burke’ s 1981 solo album, Changes, was a regional hit in Chicago that was also frequently sampled by rap artists. Eventually, “Risin’ To the Top,” with its uplifting message and infectious and funky bass line, became an anthem that has inspired listeners for the better part of three decades. Those virtues inspired new school soul band Tristan to team with romantic crooner Heston on this reimagined verison of “Risin’ To the Top.” It is a worthy new take on a classic. Check it out.
