(November 3, 2024) An “heirloom” is defined as a family possession handed down from generation to generation. It could be anything from a piece of jewelry to a piece of property, each holding sentimental value.
But what about receiving an heirloom that was intangible yet invaluable – like learning how to heal? It’s no secret that many have suffered traumatic events within their families and, unfortunately, the pain is often unprocessed and passed down to the next generation. So, learning how to heal from such trauma is an invaluable lesson.
That concept is explored in a new song called “Heirlooms” by Toy Taha, an internationally charted singer from Philadelphia. The track was produced by Grammy-winner Tone Jonez (Wale, Lecrae) in collaboration with producer BDunn.
Toy Taha, who writes and arranges her music by herself, explains the meaning of “Heirlooms”, saying: “I wrote this record about overcoming the burden of generational traumas and not sweeping them under the rug, but really digging deep to transform that pain into power and conquering those wounds.”
With such a deep message, you may imagine that the song is somber, but it is not. “Heirlooms” is an optimistic track; it’s upbeat and beams with hope for a brighter tomorrow despite a painful past. Musically, the song feels like a live performance, complete with audience applause and a horn section that would make Tower of Power nod in approval. Plus, Toy Taha’s jazz-soul vocals float throughout the song, reminiscent of Lalah Hathaway and another Philly soul songstress, Jill Scott.
