Chris Shaw, a.k.a. Topher James, could have gone a lot of direction with his musical career, but the son of a music teacher and a librarian has always been heavily influence by soul music. And that influence comes through in his music with his band Topher James and the Biscuit Brigade.
The influence of 60s soul is especially profound on the band’s mournful new single, “New Home.” Says Chris, “This track was a very personal song about a break up. I wanted to really paint a picture of a relationship using different metaphors in each verse which is not something I typically do in writing, I can be very literal at times. The very idea of a relationship being this ‘home’ that you’ve built is a concept I think about a lot. A good friend of mine Dale Alkula needs to be credited for the horn arrangements, we got together and talked about what I wanted and he just went at it and gave this track its Motown soul.”
