First Listen: The Principles of Joy say “It’s Been A Mess”

(September 6, 2021) Bearing a classic southern soul sound and full-bodied band arrangement, the French R&B collective Principles of Joy hits SoulTracks with three years of playing around Europe under its belt. And with Sarah Ibrahim and Rachel Yarabou providing expressive vocals over the compositions of Ludivic Bors and Christelle Amoussou, the members arrive as something special.

“It’s Been A Mess” tells the dramatic story of a woman who is mourning the loss of her lover after a breakup, and Yarabou sings it with such a mournfulness, the emotions appear to come from her very core. The effect is augmented by haunting backing vocals and band work that is appropriately – but chillingly – restrained.

This is a great introduction to a group from whom we’re going to want to hear more. Check out “It’s Been A Mess,” and welcome Principles of Joy to SoulTracks.
