First Look: The APX flies us to “Jupiter”

(August 31, 2018) The APX is back with new music. And a gloriously designed concept video! After dropping last year’s debut LP Electric Funk, the Atlanta-based married couple (Dee Rhodes, Erika Rhodes) kicks into high gear with “Jupiter,” a seismic jam revving with Rene & Angela ‘80’s vibes and SOS Band reverberations. It’s totally one of the funkiest jams to drop this summer, and it’s probably going to linger on our ears throughout the rest of the year.

Directed by Reggie Miller (Gucci Mane, DC Young Fly), the concept video gives us a trippy experience blessed with neon splashes, flying keytars and Futurama-era robots. As the spectacular visuals operate their gravitational pull on our eyes, Erika Rhodes does a mighty work on our ears using soulful vocals and come-hither commands (“Won’t you pull me in and take me higher”). “Jupiter love/Let’s fly away,” the pair sumptuously chants on the catchy bridge. Another round of it gives wind to a Daft Punk-esque vocoder effect that almost knocks you out.

In their bio, the electro-funk duo (“APX” stands for The After Party Experience) credits a few funky married couples that came before them, referencing Yarbrough & Peoples and Ashford & Simpson as vital inspirations. What a perfect guide to look up to. We’re most certain that their music careers are bound to take off like a rocket ship after this.
