The Temptations' "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" gets jarring new remix

(August 12, 2022) Over the past month or so, a string of classic songs by The Temptations have been the subject of eclectic remixes by producers and engineers from around the world, with both delightful and eyebrow-raising results.

This week is the latest and perhaps most jarring of the mixes. It is a new look at the genre-defining #1 funk hit, "Papa Was A Rolling Stone." The iconic song with the James Jamerson bass intro is reimagined by L.A.-based production team Agami in a style that leans more on both electronic and rock influences. The result is a darker, more menacing feel for the song that unfortunately suppresses some of the genius of the iconic original mix, and, for our money, makes the song less compelling.

Often a popular remix leads the listener back to the original version, and this one will certainly make us bask in the glory of the seminal Norman Whitfield production. We're just not sure that we'll come back and listen to this new remix again. Check it out and see what you think.
