(January 8, 2020) Soul music fans of the past four decades certainly know the name Preston Glass. The songwriter, producer and musician has been a part of many of the big hits of artists ranging from Earth, Wind & Fire to Whitney Houston to George Benson. And Preston is still going strong in 2021 in a partnership with David Nathan’s Soul Music Records imprint, issuing new music and pulling some welcome songs from the vaults.
Preston began his career in the 70s under the tutelage of master Philadelphia producer Thom Bell, and those halcyon years of soul music are the impetus for a new collection called Philly Soul Select. The compilation is a combination of previously unreleased songs by such soul music notables as The Delfonics, Lenny Williams and Chubby Tavares along with new recordings of Philly classics by a next generation of singers.
One song that captured us is a previously unreleased song from The Stylistics that Preston produced in the sessions that led to their 1996 album, Love Is Back In Style. “What You’re Goin’ Through” is big ballad highlighted by Russell Thompkins, Jr’s instantly recognizable falsetto. It tells the story of a couple going through a rough patch, with the singer not fully understanding what is wrong with his lover, but hoping that the future will find them still together.
Check out “What You’re Goin’ Through” below. We’ve also included the Spotify player with the full compilation. Welcome back, Preston.
