(September 11, 2021) In the 1970s, there was no R&B vocal group that was hotter than The Spinners. With producer supreme Thom Bell by their side, the quintet scored hit after hit, and delivered some of the most elegant Philadelphia soul albums of the time — LPs that are still revered by soul music fans more than four decades later.
While illness and sad deaths of members have left the group with only one original member, the great Henry Fambrough, the Spinners have soldiered on in concert with a lineup that includes Jessie Peck, Marvin Taylor, Ronnie Moss, and CJ Jefferson. And they gave their fans a pleasant surprise last month with their brand new album, Round The Block And Back Again.
While most of the songs on the album are new compositions written (or co-written) by producer Preston Glass, the quintet also takes on an all-time doo-wop classic. “So Much In Love” was a George Williams/Bill Jackson composition that that Tymes took to the top of the charts in 1963. It has been remade dozens of times over the years, most notably by All-4-One, who took it back to the top in 1993.
Now The Spinners take the song more upbeat, delivering impeccable harmonies underneath a light dance pacing. This is a nice updating of a classic, and a good look for current version of The Spinners, who sound fantastic together. Check out “So Much In Love” below, and tell us what you think.
