(October 28, 2022) We weren’t familiar with the eight piece band Soulajar, but, like other acts from Bakersfield, California, Soulajar has spent the last two decades melding musical styles together, with elements of R&B, jazz and country.

For its newest release, Soulajar brings in a whole troop of talent, from actress Amy Adams to SoulTracks favorite Gregory Porter, to bring new life to a classic Merle Haggard song. “Kern River Blues” is the sad tale of singers saying goodbye to the changing town of their youths:

Therе used to be a river here
Runnin’ deep and wide
Well, they used to have Kern River
Runnin’ deep and wide
Then somebody stole the water
Another politician lied

The song keeps its original country vibe, but with the distinct elements of Memphis soul added. All through the single is a live concert feel, and the vocal interplay of the cast of characters works great.
