(May 15, 2025) While the state of Colorado is known for its landmark Rocky Mountains, cities such as Denver have cultivated a vibrant soul/R&B music scene for several years. Singer/songwriter Jeanette Cooper, known as Sista Soul, is a fine representative of this.
With roots in Gospel singing and R&B work throughout the years, Sista Soul issued her first album, Celebration, in 2017. Eight years later she’s back with a sophomore release, Soul Reflections, containing the album’s first single, “With You.”
On this mellow uptempo groove anchored by acoustic guitar, bass and rhythm section, Sista Soul’s vocals are sweet, simple and full of flavor. The story of the song is one of love and praise for their partner, focusing on getting to know them better and appreciating that significant other. A great message that is welcomed, and in many ways needed, in today’s music scene.
The only thing about “With You” is its length – it’s too short!! Three minutes is not enough for this writer. At the same time, this may be a clever move from Sista Soul to leave the listener wanting more. That said, make sure you add “With You” to your playlist as spring is here and summer is around the corner. A fine addition to one’s soundtrack.
