First Listen: Sheree Brown “Ghosts” us with new single

(January 19, 2022) Last year, Sheree Brown made a welcome return to music with “Take a Walk with Love,” the lead single from her first new album in nearly a decade, Messages from the Spirit…The Collective. Now, Brown—who has written and performed on records for the likes of Patrice Rushen, Patti Austin, and the late Syreeta—revisits a fun and groovy uptempo cut from the album.

On “Sorry ‘Bout Bein’ a Ghost,” she employs a buoyantly punctuated vocal approach alongside her supple guitar work and a kinetic, percussive arrangement. The introspective lyrics are set to deceptively playful phrasing which works in tandem with light horn jabs and guest vocals from Ryanne Pens. The new Ghosted Remix layers additional beats into the mix, making for a nifty dancer that enhances the catchiness of the hook and gracefully flowing verses. It makes for delightful repeated listening with the beaming vibes of past Brown gems such as “It’s a Pleasure” and “The Music,” nuanced with a uniquely hip-hop-derived sensibility underneath.
