(March 13,2018) SoulTracks welcomes back Sean C. Johnson to the First Listen spotlight. Beginning with the Simply A Vessel series in 2006 up through his last single, “Save Me,” the current Oklahoma City native has consistently delivered his trademark ‘neoteric soul’ brand (blending eighties and nineties R&B with inventive hip-hop beats). Recently, Johnson was honored with an NAACP Award for his composition, “Well Done,” originally from Simply A Vessel II: Faithful, this time covered by Roshon Fegan for the Greenleaf Season 2 soundtrack.
In a slight change of course from his unique gospel platform, Johnson dedicates his new single “Daydreaming” to all who hold fast to old-fashioned courtships, even if in a streetwise manner: “Don’t wake me up until I find true love.” The companion video finds Johnson hoisting a boom box outside of his girlfriend’s house to proclaim his love, only to discover it was all a daydream, interrupted by his daydream girlfriend as a waitress taking his order.
Wayne Valentine’s production holds down a simple, squishy groove that unmistakably rolls with Johnson’s laid back soulful baritone. Neoteric soul is back with style and grace.
