First Listen: Ruben Studdard goes full Memphis on “Can’t Nobody Love You”

Labeled by Gladys Knight as the “Velvet Teddy Bear” during his winning season on American Idol, Ruben Studdard became a household name a few years ago, and parlayed that into a career as a solo singer who has effectively covered R&B, Gospel and pop over the years.

Ruben has a new album coming out in October called When Love Calls Me, and he’s just given us a sneak peek with the first single from the album, “Can’t Nobody Love You.” It is a song that sounds like it came straight from the Al Green catalog, with the punchy horns and Memphis-style production. And Ruben moves up to the upper levels of his register, giving the song a powerful lead and making it all work. We expect a cleaner mix when it finally hits the album, but this is an interesting direction for Ruben.

Check out this brand new song from the talented Mr. studdard, and tell us what you think!
