(March 20, 2017) Rena Scott’s discography at large may not be known to the masses, but over the course of four-plus decades she’s made many memorable musical impressions. Beginning with singles for Epic Records which she cut as a teenager in the early ‘70s, she reached the top five of Billboard’s R&B Singles chart later in the decade alongside Michael Henderson on the beautiful midtempo jam “Take Me I’m Yours” (followed shortly thereafter by her own Mtume/Lucas-produced LP Come on Inside), and returned to the listings in the late’ 80s with revered slow jams like “I Could Use a Kiss” and a surprising cover of Captain and Tennille’s “Do That to Me One More TIme.”
Since the early 2000s, Rena has released a handful of impressive solo singles and albums on her own Amor label. Recently, she traveled to the Netherlands with producer Lloyd Tolbert to embark on an adventurous remix of her 2006 smooth groove, “A Love Thang.” The new incarnation takes the form of a subtle yet atmospheric house groove which preserves the mellow authenticity of the original while adding a bit of spice with restructured vocal arrangements and percussive embellishments. For those who dug on her dynamic collaboration with Cool Million on the funky 2010 gem “Come to Me,” the ‘BM Soulful Remix’ of “A Love Thang” is sure to please those who appreciate Scott’s prowess with kinetic soul.
