(May 20, 2025) Heading into almost 50 years of joyful entertainment with 26 albums to its credit, Pieces of a Dream is simply timeless as a constant presence in the top 50 on the jazz and contemporary jazz charts. And what is the artistic secret to the group’s longevity? According to drummer Curtis Harmon, “Let’s face it, it’s gratifying to see people gathered together smiling, dancing and genuinely enjoying themselves.” After all this distinguished time, long-standing POAD members Harmon and keyboardist James Lloyd, joined by saxophonist Tony Watson and bassist David Dyson, remain faithful towards their fan base with their boundless musical energy in the studio and festivals (including the Capital Jazz Fest).
For album twenty-six, We Got This, POAD members continue demonstrating their inviting brand of jazz fusion, alongside improvisations that respect their roots inspired by their mentor, Grover Washington, Jr. and Stanley Turrentine.
With the latest edition of First Listen, P.O.A.D. returns with a track from We Got This, as “Be There for You” keeps the feet busy throughout this ‘80’s and ‘90’s flavored jam. Opening with a funk base of bass synth and drums, co-songwriter Tony Watson pilots most of the track on saxophone. And the backing voices provide pleasing harmonies on the choruses. But it’s the second half where the interaction between guest keyboardist/co-songwriter Chris ‘Big Dog’ Davis and Watson amps up the energy, graced by soulful nudges. Despite a slightly slow start, P.O.A.D. comes through with a danceable bundle of joy. Check out “Be There for You”!
