(August 24, 2021) “I Got What You Need,” the new song by Petawane, is a fun record. It’s one of those celebration of life cuts that have long been a part of the summer soundtrack. However, it’s the kind of song that people can really embrace in light of all we’ve gone through recently. Sonically, “I Got What You Need” fuses Afrobeat with straight up funk and finds Petawane deploying his emotive and expressive vocals to make his pitch to the woman who has caught his eye.
Petawane’s bio pegs him as a singer who has been entertaining the people for as long as he can remember. Harlem born and raised; the man born as James Tyrone Burris started singing in the church at the age of six. And when he wasn’t in the choir stand singing to the glory of God, Petawane was in the neighborhood singing to entertain his father and his friends. Whether Petwane was swinging in church or at home, he got a positive response and when the performing bug bit, it took hold.
Petawane draws influences from the masters like Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke, Teddy Pendergrass, the Jackson Five, just to name a few. And he uses his gift beautifully on “I Got What You Need.”
