(May 14, 2025) Singer James “Petawane” Burris can say that he won over the toughest crowd in America, and perhaps the world. Petawane went into the famed Apollo Theater on Amateur Night, and not only managed not to get booed and swept off the floor by The Sandman, the native New Yorker brought the house down with his rousing rendition of “Never Too Much.”
Petawane grabbed the Apollo audience with his voice, his confident swagger and his agility and never let them go. It was gutsy to sing a Luther song in Luther’s hometown, even if you hail from that same place. Petawane did so by showcasing a voice that can handle any style of music.
On his latest single, “Down South Woman,” displays a penchant for Southern Soul music. Where Petawane embraced the soaring Vandross inspired vocals on his “Never Too Much” rendition, he goes for the down home gutbucket on “Down South Woman.” See, Petawane is voicing his desire on “Down South Woman.” The native New Yorker wants to attract a lady with a little twang in her voice who can combine some down home sass, Southern Hospitality and southern fried cooking.
