(January 28, 2024) Late last year, singer/songwriter Myriam-Catharina made her SoulTracks First Listen debut with the soulful/jazzy (or jazzy/soulful) single, “I Miss Me”. Her mellow, smoky voice and jazz-driven vibe was greeted warmly by this site’s followers. This time, the chanteuse from the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany is back with her sophomore release, “Sometimes.”
Kicking off with a strumming of folk/jazz-driven acoustic guitar licks, with “Sometimes,” Myriam-Catharina dives into the mellow groove right away, professing love and frustration over another, putting her on a roller coaster ride of emotions.- giving their love energy only to take it away the next moment. Myriam-Catharina’s smoky and smooth vocal style reflects her love for jazz, soul and R&B, with a touch of folk. One can tell she’s studied and draws inspiration from the greats that came before (think Ella Fitzgerald meets Amy Winehouse). Overall, a very pleasant mellow groove.
This writer appreciates not only Myriam-Catharina’s artistry but her move to make the point within the songs without further belaboring. She follows the blueprint of 1960’s pop/soul songs – make the point and keep it under three minutes.
Myriam-Catharina is off to a solid start with both First Listen tunes here on SoulTracks. Looking forward to hearing more great music from this fine songstress of the Rhine.
