(February 7, 2025) Maya Delilah was working as a background session artist when COVID put her hometown of London and the entire world in lockdown. She quickly turned to livestreaming on Tik Tok where her intimate and engaging performances garnered her a large following. That led to a couple of self-released EP and a record deal. Now Delilah prepares to release her first full length album, titled The Long Way Round, which is due to drop on March 28.
We get a preview of Delilah’s talents with the release of the seductively funky “Squeeze,” which dropped at the end of January. When I say this song is seductively funky, I mean that it’s equally seductive and funky. The seduction can be found in the lyrics, as well as in Delilah’s vocal delivery. She sees someone who catches her fancy, and she has no problem in letting that person know. She lets them know all the ways that she’s shook, and Delilah wants to swoop them up in her car and take this conversation to a more intimate location.
From an arrangement standpoint, the funk in “Squeeze” oozes through the percussion that hits hard, the horn riffs that punctuate the hook, distorted guitar solo, and the bouncy bass line. “Squeeze” Maya Delilah is an artist who draws from a variety of influence, and that can be heard this “Squeeze,” a tune where listeners will hear Minneapolis funk and a bit of Larry Graham.
