If you’re in need of the perfect new addition to the late summer playlist, then focus your attention on the latest single from Malena Smith. The young aspiring St. Louis-based singer-songwriter shines forth on “18,” a bubbly feelgood gem attached to light disco-pop and breezy R&B vibes.
Produced by Ferguson’s soul man Brian Owens, “18” finds Smith pondering life choices, particularly around the age of eighteen — when we blossom towards adulthood and are forced to deal with high expectations from our own peers. While reflecting out loud (“Ten years went by racing”), a series of curious questions unfold: “Will I still be running my whole life?/Or have I been too patient?/ Has the best already passed me by?” And even with the weighty lyrics, the song manages to ascend with its dose of Corinne Bailey Rae funk.
