(December 1, 2020) They are without a doubt one of our favorite acts, and it’s simply been too long since we’ve had new music from them. SoulTrackers know that we’ve been huge fans of the husband/wife duo Kindred the Family Soul since the get go. Aja and Fatin’s unique messages of marital and community love have often seemed countercultural to what is often on radio, but have struck a chord and been an inspiration for millions of people living their daily lives. And those messages have been draped in nearly two decades of fantastic songs and always on point vocals.
On their newest single – their first in over three years – the couple takes a moment to give a prayer of thanks for the blessings that they’ve received, even in a year that at times has seemed devoid of blessings. Leading off with an acoustic guitar and a steady groove, “The Best Things” is a mellow number that recognizes the difficulty of a world that seems to be both divided and filled with loss, but steps back to equally acknowledge what else is there: the gifts of the people we love and of the positives in the world around us.
So, even as we ruminate on the losses of 2020, the song urges us to move forward with commitment: “I don’t want to miss a minute / All the moments wrapped up in it / The gift of life that’s chosen just for me.”
This is just the kind of message that a lot of folks need to hear this year, and it is no surprise that it comes from a duo that have always found love in each other and in the life they live. “The Best Things” is the first single from a nearly finished project coming from Kindred, and we simply can’t wait for the rest.
Check out “The Best Things,” and welcome Kindred The Family Soul back to SoulTracks.
