First Listen: Jozee gives reggae twist to Carpenters classic

(September 4, 2024) When a popular song is covered by another artist, the most common reason is because the latter wants to pay tribute to the original performer while putting their own spin on it.

An example of this is a new rendition of “I Won’t Last a Day Without You,” which was first a hit in the 1970’s for the successful brother-sister duo, the Carpenters.  They sang it in a soft rock/pop format but now, 50 years later, the hit tune has been recorded in a reggae style, performed by Jozee (also known as Josie Aiello).

Jozee has four decades of experience in the recording industry as a singer, songwriter and vocal arranger.  She’s lent her vocals to songs by a wide array of artists including Whitney Houston, Brian Culbertson, and Jennifer Lopez.  She was also personally signed by Quincy Jones.

Jozee’s new single was produced by award-winning veteran reggae producer – Haldane “Danny” Browne, a native of Jamaica.  His involvement in their Caribbean-style cover of “I Won’t Last a Day Without You” certainly adds to its authenticity and riddim (rhythm). Jozee and Danny decided to remake this Carpenters’ classic after discussing their shared love for the musical duo. Their cover has gained airplay in the Caribbean, on BBC Radio in the UK, and worldwide on chart-topping flutist Kim Scott’s syndicated show, “Block Party Radio.”

Whether you’re a casual or diehard reggae fan, this catchy remake is sure to be pleasing to your ears and can make you feel like you’re relaxing on the beautiful island of Jamaica as you think of the one you can’t live a day without.  Check out Jozee’s song here.
