(July 29, 2024) “No Time Like Now” is the kind of song that could be played as the first dance for a newly married couple at their wedding reception. If this tune does make the set list at a reception, I can see a lot of people going to the Google machine to find out which 1960s era doo wop group they are listening to.
Joaquin and the Glowliners, the San Antonio based band that made this record, is a contemporary group that captured the sound of a group singing on a street corner in the mid-1960s. This is not an accident. Joaquin Muerte, the frontman of Joaquin and the Glowliners, was intentional about creating new and original music that is heavily indebted to old school Chicano Soul.
“No Time Like Now” is a cut that honors the optimism that accompanies a bride and groom to the alter. The is a ballad that fuses all of the elements that made people fall in love with old school soul music, from the instrumental conversation between the blue inspired bass and guitar to the call and response between Muerte and his backing vocalists.
Then there are the lyrics that place you in a pew inside a church sanctuary witnesses two people becoming one. It’s a great song. Check out Joaquin and the Glowliners “No Time Like Now” here.
