First Listen: Jim Viner goes retro on “Comango”

It is tough to talk about 60s R&B without pretty quickly getting to the legendary Booker T and the MGs. And it is in that spirit that drummer Jim Viner has created Jim Viner’s Incredible B3 Band. Comprising veterans of session work and touring acts, the B3 Band trades in the sonics of mid-’60s Memphis, with the result being the new album Comango!.

Viner is fronting his own outfit for the first time. A member of The Diplomats of Solid Sound, Brother Trucker, High and Lonesome and Head Candy, Jim has played on stage and in the studio with such artists as Andre Williams, Pieta Brown and Kevin Gordon. His compositions and playing can be heard on myriad film and television soundtracks, including Lionsgate’s “Madea’s Big Happy Family” and Showtime’s hit series “Weeds.” Taking the melodic leads are Hammond B-3 players Nate Basinger and Radoslav Lorkovic, who enjoy empathetic backing by guitarists Mike Fitzpatrick and Doug Roberson, saxophonist Eddie McKinley and percussionist Paul Cunliffe.

We’re digging the album’s title track, a slice of vintage 60s funky R&B. Jim tells us about it: “We were thinking what it would sound like if The Meters were doing a detective show soundtrack – the beginning of the cut is where the detectives are getting info at the local bar, and the middle of the song is the chase scene.

We love that vision! Listen to “Comango!” below and tell us what you think.
