(June 23, 2021) Back in 1987, the R&B band Club Nouveau seemed to take over the world. They won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song (“Lean On Me”) and began a string of hits, including “Situation #9” and “Jealousy,” that continued for years afterward.
They returned successfully a few years with with the album Consciousness, but more recently we’ve been enjoying the solo work of group leader Jay King. Jay is readying the release of a new album (due in August) that is another creative take on R&B, called Soulful Bossa Nova.
We’ve heard advance clips from the disc, and it is a refreshing amalgamation of styles that should score with SoulTrackers. As Jay tells us, “Because I LOVE Bossa Nova music, Joao Gilberto and Carlos Jobim and Marvin Gaye is my favorite artist of all time, I set out to create what I coin as Soulful Bossa Nova or Cool R&B. You’ll hear different elements throughout the project on different songs. We have married R&B, Jazz, Samba & Bossa Nova to create a new musical movement.”
You can hear those disparate elements in the title cut for the upcoming album, which we’re proud to present as our newest SoulTracks First Listen. Check out “Soulful Bossa Nova” below, and welcome back the great Jay King.
