If you’ve been to SoulTracks the last couple years, you couldn’t help but read about Jarrod Lawson. The talented young singer, songwriter and musician was the winner of our Editor’s Pick for Album of the Year last year, and he has continued to shine on our pages regularly.
Well, today is no exception! Jarrod is part of the upcoming Bespeak Love compilation of music from Portland, Oregon artists, and his contribution is a scorcher; “You Got Me” is a classic soul jam fitting of Teddy or Gerald. Opening with a lush wall of strings and horns, the song finds the singer pleading and crooning to convince his love that he’s there for her. And with the background singers cooing behind in beautiful call-and-response fashion, how could she doubt his love?
“You Got Me” shows us yet another side of an artist who always seems to bring it, and this song may be his most accessible to classic soul fans. And it immediately moves into to my top 10 songs of the year. Take a listen to “You Got Me” below, and get ready for Bespeak Love, coming on August 1.
