First Look: Mary J Blige and Jacky Clark “Feel Good” on new single

(February 7, 2020) If ever there was a formula for an instant earworm, it’s this: add a heap of  “sunshiny” gospel, a ration of realness and a playful portion hip-hop, served on an uptempo platter with some retro on the side. And when two of the voices come from Jacky Clark Chisholm (of the legendary Clark Sisters) and Mary J. Blige, you have no choice but to download, hit “play” and “Feel Good.”

With so much going on from day to day, from the personal to the political, it can be difficult at times to see the positive side, so it helps to have a reminder—-from Grammy-Award-winning game-changers at that—to know that even in the midst of struggle and uncertainty, there is still a reason to enjoy life. After Chisholm’s warm and familiar trill opens with rejoicing (“Get up, jump up, all over the nation/it’s a party, it’s a celebration”), Blige’s verse anchors the middle with a truth that mixes the solemn and the sweet: “Count your blessings and not your problems, worrying about them won’t help you solve them/if you can’t think of a reason to celebrate, just think about the fact that you woke up today.”

Spiced up with a fun rap cameo by up-and-coming Inglewood CA talent Tia P, “Feel Good” is ready to infuse 2020 with some urban-flavored praise. So plate it up, savor and serve.
