(September 6, 2023) There are some artists whose biggest offense is that we simply don’t hear them enough. Heather Headley is near the top of that list for me. A singer who has elegantly conquered both popular recording and the stage, Headley has the uncanny ability to seemingly capture the emotional essence of any song she touches, always making it better.
So it was a treat to have her first single in three years hit this week, in the form of the ballad ”With You” from the Netflix series Sweet Magnolias. Written by Stephen Lawrence Schwartz, “With You” is right down the center lane for both Headley and Urban Adult Contemporary radio.
With the simple accompaniment of acoustic guitar, keyboards and drums, the song lets Headley’s vocals take their rightful place up front, inspiring in a song of love, and dreaming how it can take a person toward their goals. It is just beautiful.
