First Listen: Gary Palmer gets “Lonely” on cool new single

(May 19, 2023) One of the most challenging things a jazz artist can do is craft an instrumental cover of a classic song.  Sometimes an artist tries so hard to stay true to the song that it lacks originality. Other times artists will change the song so much that it becomes unrecognizable. That “sweet spot” can be hard to find. In the case of saxophonist Gary Palmer and his newest single, a cover of Janet Jackson’s “I Get Lonely,” he is able to find that middle ground.

The latest in a string of successful singles by Palmer that include 2021’s “Let’s Ride” and 2022’s “Glad To Be With Ya (On Christmas),” “I Get Lonely” stays relatively true to the original in terms of percussion and arrangement. From the opening seconds that familiar melody is apparent. What makes this version its own entity is Palmer’s sax being pushed to the front. While there are vocals during the song’s chorus, they are set in a complimentary and secondary tone, standing behind Palmer’s powerful performance. It’s effective in giving the listener something to sing along to, while not taking away from the track.

While we wait for Palmer’s next full length album, “I Get Lonely” is a welcome addition to his catalog. It’s the latest example of a cover that protects the integrity of the original, while simultaneously breathing new life into it.
