Eric Roberson’s new song, the acoustic and folk inspired “Things Meant for Me,” is about the importance of listening to the voice that holds the key to finding one’s purpose. An artist like Roberson might call that voice his muse, and since he reflects on how personal experiences inspired some of the songs he wrote, there might be a temptation to think Erro is not talking to the rest of us.

However, he makes it clear from the start that “Things Meant for Me” holds a message for anyone who is “struggling to find their way.” That message is that the signs that will allow us to uncover our life’s purpose and mission are all around us. The signs are in our daily encounters, the challenges we face and the setbacks we experience. We need to be open to the messages and meanings of these encounters and willing to pursue their hidden truths, even if those truths are uncomfortable, if we hope to find our purpose.

We learn in “Things Meant for Me” that is how Erro wrote some of his most popular songs. The second verse finds Roberson singing these lyrics over his acoustic guitar; “Often times I felt bad when things went wrong/Those tough times always led to a good songs/Years later someone would tell me that song helped them grow.”

Roberson has written about the temptations and loneliness of life on the road and the mixed blessings that notoriety and sudden fame can have on relationships. However, “Things Meant for Me” is an introspective look at the relationship between Eric Roberson, the husband, father, son, and Erro the artist, and how the latter transforms what the former experiences into the art we enjoy. It is his most personal song. Check out “Things Meant for Me” here.
