Eric Benet and Tamar Braxton shine together on “Something”

From the mid-1990s into the 2010s, Eric Benét paved a path as a sophisticated purveyor of neo-soul with gems such as “True to Myself,” “Femininity,” “Love Don’t Love Me,” and a delightfully funky cover of Toto’s “Georgy Porgy.” On the latter, Faith Evans contributed standout vocals; but it was via his follow-up duet with Tamia, “Spend My Life with You,” that Benét scored his first #1 R&B single.

Eight years have passed since his last album (a self-titled set featuring the notable “Sunshine”). Now, Benét is honing in on the concept of dynamic vocal collaborations begun in earlier singles with the aptly titled upcoming release, Duets. The first taste comes via a sensuously slithering slow-jam, “Something We Can Make Love To,” on which he’s joined by Tamar Braxton in an alluring exchange of romantic passages and passionate sentiments. Nuanced production provides an ideal musical brew of mellow tone and seductive groove for the duo’s vocals to flow organically.

“Ima give your body what it wants, ‘cause baby I’ve got so much to prove,” croons Benét as he glides into the first chorus. Braxton reciprocates the desire in verse two with tender solicitation: “Leave all the lights on, babe/Let me kiss every inch of your face.” A bit more vocal interplay would enhance the atmosphere nicely. Both talents are in their element, however, with the melodic phrasing and relaxed arrangement of the song (penned by Benét). It’s a promising preview of Duets that has us eager to hear what other pairings he has in store for his long-awaited return.

Take a First Listen to Eric Benét and Tamar Braxton on “Something We Can Make Love To” and welcome back two of modern R&B’s finest talents.
