First Listen: Michael McDonald leads Doobies through soulful “Let Go”

(March 14, 2025) They were a quintessential boogie bar band in the 1970s before making a sea change late in the decade with the admission of Michael McDonald to the band, and the transformation to a soulful rock act that took over popular radio and The Grammy Awards with the album Minute By Minute and the #1 smash “What A Fool Believes.” They are the legendary Doobie Brothers, and they have amassed a sea of fans in multiple musical genres over their more than half century together.

Now, as the group prepares Walk This Road, their first album with McDonald in tow in more than four decades, they’ve issued another advance single, the soul-and-blues infused “Learn to Let Go.” The song is led by McDonald’s plaintive baritone and keyboards, but with the kind of full band groove that highlighted the Doobies’ best work of the late 70s and early 80s. And it helps that the song is an absolutely solid composition that provides the too-true advice about not giving up on love altogether just because that love didn’t work:

When you lose at love
This world may keep on turning
But it’s just gonna keep on hurting
Till you learn to let go babe

We’re getting increasingly excited about the upcoming Walk This Road, and we think SoulTrackers will too. Check out “Learn To Let Go” below.
