First Look: Detroit supergroup comes together for funky jazz “Rocket Love”

(February 15, 2020) SoulTrackers know my love for my hometown of Detroit. It is a city with a rich heritage of music, and one that continues to stand tall with new music in the 21st Century.

It is with that background that the new album, Detroit Rising: A Cosmic Jazz Funk Adventure, arrives on February 14. Recorded live at the iconic United Sound studios in Detroit, home of many classic songs by P-Funk and Motown, Detroit Rising is a disc that combines elements of R&B, jazz, funk and hip-hop into a creative collection of songs that should appeal to both the progressive and the lovers of classic jams. The project features current and original members of the archetypal funk band Parliament-Funkadelic, along with a selection of world class talent from across the country.

We have a cool video for the new single from the album, “Rocket Love,” featuring drummer Gabe Gonzalez (Parliament Funkadelic), guitarist Duminie Deporres (Public Enemy), keyboardist Greg Fitz (Bootsy), bass player Brandon Rose, and in front is singer and rapper LAW. It is called “an outer space love song,” and that’s a pretty good description. With a groove that goes on for days and a combination of sung and spoken word leads, it is a cool nighttime jam, and one we think SoulTrackers will dig.

We’re proud to present a live recording of “Rocket Love,” filmed at Rough Trade Records in New York. Check it out below and welcome Detroit Rising to SoulTracks.
