(October 11, 2024) “Oye Mi Canto,” the new song by internationally known singer and songwriter Dessy Di Lauro, is a musical statement of pride in her Caribbean, Cuban, African and Brazilian heritage. That comes through clearly in the lyrics where Di Lauro sings about the lands where her ancestors created a music born of resistance, spirituality, joy and history.
“Oye Mi Canto” also honors the rhythms that emerged when African, merged with indigenous, Christianity interacted with traditional religions and Spanish and Portuguese connected with all those influences. Di Lauro’s newest creation gives up the percussion gifted to this continent by Africans, the acoustic guitar of Spain and the lyrics that provide rich descriptions of the ancestral, historical cultural and spiritual stands that give this music such power.
Di Lauro says the following about the tune: Oye Mi Canto is an ode to the ancestors. I stand on the shoulders of those who paved the way and fought for me to get this far. All of my rich influences, inspirations, rhythms and melodies…. It’s about pride for Caribbean, Cuban, Brazilian, African roots. Whatever and whomever you are repping, be proud of who you are. I honor my ancestors. I am a child of immigrant parents, and I am so proud to represent everything that they are, I am, and those that came before.
