First Listen: Wayne Davis teaches us “Da Bass ics” of Love

dabassics

We just recently heard about songwriter and musician Wayne Davis (aka DaBass*ics), and our intro was the beautiful ballad, “I’m Still Here,” featuring singer Kal-El Gross. The song has a laid back groove that accompanies its lyrics of thanks for a good love. Here is how Wayne describes the song, which is featured on his new album, A Childhood Dream.

This song was based on when I first me my lady “Sweet T.” (May 2005).   We met in church (I was the new bassist and she was the choir director/soloist).    We had a spiritual connection from the first time that I actually made eye contact with her.  It was like we were having a deep conversation without words and we both understood the conversation.   I don’t know if there is such a thing as love at first sight, but for me this was the closest thing to it as I still can’t get her off of my mind.

Although she wasn’t formally trained, she did everything with grace and poise when it came to the choir.  I thought to myself that this girl has something special that I’ve never seen before and all I wished was that she could share her life with me.  As we communicated about the choir and church over the telephone and via email, we actually didn’t go out on our first date until several months later.  In between the time when we first met and the first date, I would watch her and admire her as she would either direct or sing a solo.

Fast forward to three years later, we got out of church one day and went to her house for lunch.  As she prepared lunch for us, I picked up the guitar and started playing.  The music flowed out of it so effortlessly that I went and grabbed my digital recorder to capture the moment.  Once it was recorded, I reflected back on how we met, (the rough patches that we’ve experienced as well as the good times) and it resulted in a testimony of my commitment to us.  The lyrics pretty much fell in place on the paper. The end result is “I’m Still Here.”

Well, we’re glad that Wayne pulled out the guitar that day, as we feel blessed to hear this song. Check it out below. It is our newest SoulTracks First Listen.
