First Listen: Chrisette Michele wows us again on “Wait”

(July 10, 2020) Thirteen years ago, Chrisette Michele burst on the scene with a voice that harkened back to the jazz greats of the 1930s and 40s, but a sense of the here and now. She felt both classic and refreshingly new. She’s issued some great records since then, and also some head-scratchers, but when she is at her best, she is simply marvelous.

Chrisette is still smarting from controversy around her performance at the 2017 presidential inauguration, and she has openly discussed “cancel culture” and how it has affected her. We hope she can rebound, and if her newest single is any indication, she has the music to do it. “Wait” starts with a simple piano and that voice, as she sings a prayer to God asking for help, hoping for a pace that is faster than she feels the blessings are coming, but understanding that she has to wait for His time.

Chrisette sounds marvelous on the jazzy number, reminding us again why we found her so special 13 years ago. Check out “Wait” below and tell us what you think.
