First Listen: Beya has a “Crush” on cool new single

(December 27, 2023) Beya Rabehi was not the first musician in her family. The French born singer and songwriter was influenced by and followed the footsteps of her older brother. Seeing her brother perform set Beya on the path of composing and singing her own material. That started her on a journey that led her to join bands and perform in her native country before embarking on a trek to San Francisco to study in the land where jazz, R&B and hip-hop were born.

Those influences along with the percussive sounds of Afropop and the on-the-one influence of funk can be heard in “Crush,” Beya’s new single and a creative cover of Zhane’s 1997 song. “Crush” is a jam fuses the DJ on the turntable influence of hip-hop with the smoothness of 1980s era synth funk to tell a story of a person trying to summon the courage to take a crush to the next level.
