You can’t help but smile when you see Jamison Ross. A gentle bear of a man with an infectious grin, a polite and engaging demeanor, and a warmth to his music that lays bare his New Orleans roots and formative years singing in church, Jamison charmed a full house on June 22nd at Dizzy’s Club in New York City.
Center stage at his drum kit, and backed by his formidable band, all former college classmates and dear friends, Jamison took us on a delightful, hour-long journey through his debut album, Jamison, discussing his influences along the way and urging his band mates to step out for solos. “Emotions” and “These Things” from the album were especially lovely in a live setting, but there was not a single weak moment in this well played, and paced, performance.
Perhaps the most notable feature of the evening was Jamison’s elastic and buttery smooth voice, which while impressive on his album is even more remarkable live. Gospel, jazz and soul influences clearly shape his phrasing and deft use of dynamics, which he used to greatest effect when singing “We Shall Overcome” acappella in memory of the victims of the recent tragedy in Charleston. You feel better about the world, and the future, in Jamison’s company. Catch his remaining CD release concerts if you can in New Orleans, Atlanta and LA!
