Billboard Magazine picks Michael, The Temptations and Mary J.as “Greatest of All Time”

(March 1, 2017) For decades, Billboard Magazine has been the keeper of the most revered album and singles charts in music. And, for the first time, Billboard is now using those charts and some math calculations to honor the top artists and projects in various musical genres.

So, in an article posted today, Billboard has named the top R&B/Hip-Hop artist, album and song of all-time.

The winners named by Billboard are The Temptations for top artist of all time (with sixteen #1 songs), Michael Jackson for top album for Thriller (an astounding 37 weeks at #1), and Mary J. Blige wins the singles award for the 15 week run at #1 for “Be Without You.”

Of course, we are scrunching our noses a bit at both the use of chart position to define “Greatest” as well as the combining of so many historical black music genres into a single grouping (Aretha and Macklemore together, really?). Also, the results are only as good as the math assumptions (and you get no credit for a #2 song or album). But, at a time when physical magazines are having some challenges getting the shine they deserve for their hard work, we understand why Billboard would take on this exercise and show off it’s statistical vault. What do you think about it?
