The Intruders

Philadelphia soul had no shortage of great vocal groups, but few combined the silk and the gritty soul as effortlessly as The Intruders. Formed in 1960, the classic lineup featured Sam “Little Sonny” Brown, Eugene “Bird” Daughtry, Robert “Big Sonny” Edwards, and Phillip “Phil” Terry — four voices that blended with a natural ease that felt both street-corner rooted and studio refined.

Their story is, of course. linked with the songwriting and production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, who found in The Intruders the perfect vehicle for their emerging style: elegant arrangements, heartfelt storytelling, and melodies that lingered. Together, they crafted a string of hits that defined late-60s soul, including “Cowboys to Girls,” “(We’ll Be) United,” and “Together.”

What set The Intruders apart was the interplay among those members. Brown handled most of the leads with a conversational, almost pleading tenor, while Daughtry and Edwards provided steady harmonic grounding. Terry’s smoother tone added another layer, giving the group a flexibility that producers could shape depending on the song’s mood. Even as Brown was later temporarily replaced by Bobby Starr, the group maintained that signature blend — polished but never sterile.

By the early 70s, they continued their run with favorites like “I’ll Always Love My Mama,” a joyful, multigenerational anthem that remains in heavy rotation decades later.

Though lineup changes and shifting musical tastes eventually dimmed their commercial spotlight, The Intruders’ are rightly recognized for their role in introducing the lush, orchestrated soul that would dominate the 1970s, and their collaborations with Gamble and Huff helped launch a period of Philly Soul dominance — a period and a discography that have help up beautifully all these years later.
