July 27, 2017 –Welcome back to Another Groove, our series dedicated to new music that is neither pure soul nor R&B but which contains elements of those genres and may delight your ears. This week we feature the track “So Young” by the band Portugal The Man.
Formed in Wasila, Alaska in 2006, Portugal The Man has released eight albums, the most recent of which, Woodstock, dropped last month. Their music is a tasty gumbo of alt rock, electronica, and hip hop with falsetto vocals that sometimes veer into R&B territory. They have collaborated over their career with several leading artists and producers, including Danger Mouse and Mike D. of the Beastie Boys, both of whom are credited with tracks on their new album.
Our featured track is a slow, head-nodding rocker with a hip hop beat and soulful background vocals that may compel you to play it repeatedly. Fans of Danger Mouse’s work with Broken Bells and Gnarls Barkley should especially find it pleasing. Enjoy.

Portugal The Man – “So Young”
N.B. The band usually presents its name as “Portugal. The Man,” but the author couldn’t bring himself to include that troublesome, odd period, and notes that some promoters appear to struggle with it as well!
