(March 16, 2025) Occasionally, a vocalist possesses a remarkable ability to pierce the listeners’ radar from the first note. And Abi Farrell conveys those qualities with an unquestionable honesty, injecting a soulful spirit, no matter what genre she approaches.
The Oxfordshire County England singer/songwriter looked towards sharp female voices from the U.S. like Chaka Khan and Carole King to carry her artistry since the debut E.P. in 2019, The Only Way I Learn. Eventually, Farrell became a regular fixture with the SoulTracks family, conveying introspective storylines – such as “Don’t Follow Me,” a resounding message about the injustices women boldly fought through, and “Nobody Else,” about two people who firmly choose a lifelong relationship commitment.
Returning to SoulTracks on the latest First Listen, Farrell journalizes “47 Days,” a pop/soul delight that finds the toes tapping. There’s a change in the production chair from longtime associate Mitch Ayling to Nick Atkinson, whose guitar hooks spruce up the mood, complimented by the funky brass section, pristine keys and a warm, rhythmic foundation from the drums and bass. This appealing romantic tale, co-written by Farrell, Atkinson and Kat Eaton, spins love that was ill-timed yet produces an eternally positive ending:
“47 days ago we had/But it felt like so much more than that/The thought of you has never left my mind/It’s like we never said goodbye.”
As always, Farrell’s lead vocal presence locks in the song from the opening adlib. And the supporting vocals from Farrell and Eaton ooze delectably drawn-out notes on the chorus. Check out “47 Days” below.
